Don't forget that  natural Vitamin E helps
avoid forgetfulness, fights off free radicals

Daily intake of natural Vitamin E is recommended as a leading method to counter forgetfulness, according to the Johns Hopkins Medical Letter, "Health After 50."

Dr. Peter V. Rabins, a psychiatrist and medical editor at Johns Hopkins, recommends "taking 400 IU (international units) to l,000 IU of natural Vitamin E daily."

Writing in the column "Consultation Corner" in the coming August issue of the Johns Hopkins publication, Dr. Rabins said that natural Vitamin E provides "increased protection from free radicals -- molecules that are thought to contribute to the aging process."

Numerous health studies have determined that natural Vitamin E, made from soybeans, is superior to the synthetic version, manufactured from petroleum sources. Natural Vitamin E can be identified by a bottle's label describing it as "d alpha tocopherol." Natural Vitamin E has been shown to be better absorbed and retained by the body than synthetics.

"Forgetfulness is one of the most common complaints of middle age and beyond," Dr. Rabins said. He noted that ordinary forgetfulness doesn't signal the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

"Be reassured," he said. "It's perfectly normal to forget a book title or even the names of friends. What's not normal is forgetting what a book is or being unable to recall that a person is your friend."
