‘Stomp’
provides entertainment, opportunity for
generations to share magic of dance at Fox

Nihiser and Meredith Nero

Publisher’s note: Callie and Meredith are
two teen-age young ladies, both of whom have
either studied or are studying dance. Their
visit to ‘Stomp’ offered the opportunity for
The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis to
make its mark on a new generation of theater
goers, and, also in The Fox tradition, to do
so as a family outing. Their impressions
follow.
When we knew that ‘Stomp’ was making a
return visit to The Fabulous Fox Theatre, we
knew we wanted to see it, even though we
really didn’t know what to expect. All we
knew was, it sounded ‘cool’. And, it seemed
like a great opportunity to spend some
quality time with Rick, Callie’s Dad.
After all, the concept has already been a
success at the movies although it was the
theater production that set the stage for
the movie. It’s hard to believe that the
show is now 18 years old but is as fresh as
ever.
That is quite an achievement for a
production with no dialogue, and a reliance
upon the most common of mundane items
including push brooms, garbage cans,
crumpled newspapers, and even cigarette
lights, the last in a really great
production in which the lighters are
transformed into a ‘dance’ routine in which
clicks and lighting equal to the best
choreography to grace The Fox stage.
One of the most stirring productions was the
‘drums’ that were played in almost total
darkness.
The show has an ironic humor that
illustrates that ‘dance’ and ‘music’ are
much more than elaborate productions, and
that the potential for finding them is
present in a host of items that we might
otherwise ignore. Perhaps, if there is a
moral to this presentation, it could be that
it might be appealing to look at other
things in our lives—people, for example—that
have a similar potential.
About that night with Dad: The Fox has
provided untold numbers of families for
nearly 80 years. And, if anyone ever
wondered why this wonderful link to theater
history has been able to remain so popular,
we urge them to have a night with Dad, Mom,
or family at The Fox. The beautiful setting
combined with productions the quality of
‘Stomp’ will create a unique family
experience. And, you'll find out that
like music and dance from unexpected places,
Dads can been cool, also.
Unfortunately, the show was in town for only
a short time, but that only means that it
gives us something to look forward to when
‘Stomp’ makes a return to The Fabulous Fox
Theatre.
