Software
helps seniors improve cognitive capabilities
New computer programming promoted by the Jerusalem-based
non-profit, GeronTech - The Israeli Center for Assistive
Technology and Aging, is helping combat the reduced
cognitive functioning that can affect all aspects of daily
living among seniors, making even a trip to the grocery
store a major challenge.
Among GeronTech's successful supported
companies is CogniFit Mind Fitness Solutions Ltd, which has
developed MindFit, a program of computer exercises that
boost short-term memory, attention, and perception. This
interactive software package aims to delay cognitive decline
in people suffering from cognitive diseases such as
Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. It is based on recent advances
in neuroscience and cognitive science that have demonstrated
that when the human brain is exercised, and properly
stimulated, neurons destroyed by the various cognitive
diseases can be regenerated.
Another new Cognifit technology is Golden
DriveFit, a popular program to help seniors enhance and
maintain driving performance. Seniors learn skill-enhancing
technologies through workshops and seminars, and gain
invaluable tools to confront the challenges aging brings.
For use on PCs, DriveFit is a user-friendly, interactive
program that uniquely adapts itself to the user's specific
strengths and weaknesses. The DriveFit technology was
recently awarded the prestigious Prince Michael
International Award for Road Safety for its outstanding
contribution to road safety in the UK.
