TodaysSeniorsNetwork.com is proud to launch
this new, expanded collection of stories and information to help
seniors, boomers and others to detect and fight melanoma skin
cancers, which, while the among
the easiest to detect, cure and even to avoid, can also be among the
most deadly.
Our interest is sparked by the
fact that Publisher Daniel Hines had a melanoma removed from his
neck. Like many people his age (67), as a youth he took pride
in his sunburns and peeling skin as a first step towards 'tanning.'
All he got on his fair skin was freckles and exposure to conditions
that as he aged would lead to moles and melanoma.
It is our goal to help others
avoid this. Our collection of stories follows:
Early diagnosis key to
melanoma cure...A combined strategy of public
education and early diagnosis currently offers the only hope of cure
for people with melanoma, warn senior doctors in this week’s BMJ...(more)
Overexposure to the sun can happen
indoors and outdoors...In
the car, at work or walking to and from a store, you can’t escape
the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays...(more)
Melanoma vaccine strategy
shows promise in laboratory experiments...A novel approach to
creating a vaccine to treat melanoma has demonstrated promising
effectiveness in a new laboratory study led by researchers at The Wistar Institute. About a third of melanoma patients might benefit
from such a vaccine. The study appears in the current issue of
Cancer Research...(more)
Mayo Clinic
reports new option
for patients with metastatic melanoma...Patients with metastatic melanoma (MM) have new hope, says a
recently published study by Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. The
study, which shows the combination of paclitaxel and
carboplatin (PC) appears to be effective for MM when
traditional treatments have failed, is in this month's issue
of Cancer...(more)
Researchers test new therapy for
advanced melanoma ...Melanoma is a particularly deadly
form of skin cancer very resistant to treatment. Researchers at H.
Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute and the University of
South Florida are testing a promising new therapy that prompts the
immune system to aid in the fight against melanoma tumors...(more)
Skin
cancer reaching epidemic status...The statistics on skin cancer
should make you grab the sun screen and a hat before you head
outdoors, or perhaps cancel that appointment at the tanning salon...(more)
Early detection
of thick melanomas
remains same
despite campaigns promoting
early detection, increased awareness...(more)
