RSVP
developing intergenerational tutor mentoring programs,
At a time when many tutoring programs in the Chicago Public
Schools are closing because of funding problems, RSVP
(Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) is developing
Intergenerational Tutoring/Mentoring Programs at three sites
in Chicago.
During this past school year, RSVP has sent its
volunteers into public school classrooms to tell their
stories in numerous grade and high schools.
The
tutoring/mentoring program has developed based on these
tutoring/mentoring experiences. The first of three sites has
been selected. Hayt School on the far north side will have
RSVP tutors during their summer school as well as a
developed tutor/mentoring program during the school year.
A Vista volunteer, Pam Waltz, has joined RSVP and will be
the primary organizer of the project. She has a Masters
degree in early childhood education with an emphasis on
intergenerational programs and has years of experience with
tutoring programs involving children of different ages.
While the first site selected is far north, the intention
is to include other areas of Chicago.
People interested in tutoring in the schools must be at
least 55 years old. Those interested should call (312)
922-2183, ext. 301 for further information.
RSVP is a nationwide volunteer network funded by the
Corporation for National and Community Service, the Illinois
Department of Aging, and local contributors. RSVP of Jane
Addams Hull House Association of Chicago provides volunteer
opportunities for those 55 and over who wish to cont ribute
their experience and talents within their communities.
Each
year, over 900 volunteers contribute 220,000 hours in public
schools, after-school programs, hospitals, museums, public
housing facilities, hospices, senior centers, agencies
serving the disabled, and other Chicagoland non-profit
organizations. For more information call (312) 922-2183,
ext. 301.
