A new way technology is helping to find missing, abducted and exploited children

August 2007 (Medialink) -Almost 800,000 children in the United States are reported missing or abducted each year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. When a child disappears, every second counts to increase the likelihood of a safe return. A new program is helping to do just that.

Team Adam provides rapid, on-site assistance to law enforcement agencies and families in cases of missing, abducted and exploited children. Its members are retired law-enforcement professionals with years of investigative experience at the federal, state and local level. Named after Adam Walsh, the abducted and murdered son of the co-founders of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), they recently received a donation from OnStar.

In addition to the $300,000 donation, OnStar will also provide AMBER Alerts issued by the NCMEC into its call center's geographical mapping system. When a customer calls in from an AMBER Alert area, the advisor will let them know of the situation, and ask them if they would like additional information to help identify the child.
