Department
of Aging awards $1.2 Million in Stimulus
Funds for Older Adult Job Training
HARRISBURG, PA-- More than 100 additional
Pennsylvania residents aged 55 and older can
take advantage of on-the-job training thanks
to $1.2 million in federal stimulus funds
provided through the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act.
The Pennsylvania Department of Aging has
awarded the funds for Senior Community
Services Employment Program (SCSEP).
Funding
goes through several Area Agencies on Aging
and Experience Works, a private non-profit
employment and training agency.
"This 20 percent expansion will greatly help
older adults who need and want to work while
they receive training," said Department of
Aging Secretary John Michael Hall.
"Older workers bring good work habits and a
great desire to succeed as they enter or
re-enter the job market."
The ARRA funding comes at a critical time
when many older adults are returning to the
workforce due to economic difficulties.
The money will expand the current 500 people
who are receiving training through the SCSEP
employment and training program.
All of the on-the-job training is with
private non-profit organizations and public
agencies.
Individuals enrolled in SCSEP are paid the
state or federal minimum wage, whichever is
greater.
To qualify for the program, an individual
can earn up to $13,538 and a couple can earn
up to $18,213.
