To listen to and see Mary Hill at the
newly revamped lounge and dining area at the Stillman Inn in Galena, IL is
to enjoy an era of outstanding music performed by an artist with a style
too-seldom found today.
Mary, whose classical training is evident
in her smooth, velvety voice, has had a rich and varied career that includes
singing with the famous St. Louis Muny, the St. Louis Symphony, backup for
Karen Carpenter and the Carpenters, and even an appearance to sing solo
before the Pope.
Mary is a senior, but one should not ask
such a lady her age. Suffice it to say, she is an example of elegant
style and manners--this woman loves people--who has provided The Stillman
with a unique entertainment experience.
Although she was playing the piano as well
when we visited with her, she usually has a partner who accompanies her.
She prefers to sing only she is not playing, but when we found out she had
performed for years at The Muny, where we were scheduled to be Monday for
the opening of its 85th season, we pleaded which her to sing.
She did, and did so admirably. She
has the ability to do a wide range of songs, ranging from the theater to
more-typical lounge songs. The smoothness of her voice and her
wonderful complexion give credit to her nickname of 'Peaches'.
Mary is a wonderful example, also, of
successful aging. She is in a later-life marriage with husband Dennis,
who matches her for charm, energy and friendliness.
And, while she is proud of her accomplishments, Mary is a person who lives
for the moment and the future. She has settled in the wonderful Galena
Territory and approached it with the same vigor she does everything.
Still, it is interesting to hear her
stories of people she has known and celebrities for whom she has performed
or with whom she has worked.
While the appearance before the Pope is a highlight, she spoke with a
poignant tone about working with the star-crossed Karen Carpenter.
Mary provides a bonus for the visitors to
the expanded services of the dining room, a move by Stillman owners Dave and
Bernice Anderson to solidify their goal of making a visit to their B&B a
'total vacation experience.'
With the talent and help of people like
Mary, it is a good bet that they will succeed and attract a growing number
of devotees, even as Mary can be expected to do.
