I am a fan of Southern Gospel Music.
But, even if you are not, you have to respect not only the strong
conviction of so many of its top performers, but also their tremendous
talent.
And, when a singer is called 'my favorite Gospel singer' by such a
personage as Elvis Presley, you have to stop and take notice.
Jake Hess offers a prime example of just
how his love of his Lord and of the music he sings on His behalf, has
allowed this Southern Gospel Legend to continue to be a favorite of
audiences around the world.
He
is a regular on the Gaither Tours and has now released All of Me, a
new album that shows that the years haven't taken anything away from his
wonderful lead singer voice.
It has been an eventful five decades for
the energetic, personable Jake. But don't think it hasn't been
without its valleys as well as its mountain tops. Consider: Jake has had
many serious illnesses -- heart disease, cancer, diabetes, nephritis,
circulatory problems - But, he has always had a sense of humor.
His medical condition makes him
ineligible for a heart transplant, but Jake continues his optimistic ways
and keeps trusting in God. And, he keeps busy.
Apparently a woman fan visited his
hospital and wanted to know what room he was in. She went to it and
came back down in a huff, telling the people downstairs that there wasn't
anyone there, "but an old bald-headed man lying in bed."
Still, Jake isn't going to give up his toupee and why should he. A
humble man, he realizes that God has blessed him, allowing him to fulfill
such goals as 'singing with the greatest Gospel quartet--The
Statesmen" and being the recipient of a Grammy. Now, he has written a
new book.
None of this will be news to the legion
of fans Jake can point to, but for those who are seeking some sort of
reprise from the oft-troublesome times in which we live, Jake, his faith
in God and Jesus, and his clear voice offer a respite that is both
uplifting and entertaining.
