Galena Cellars shows that it hasn't
lost its charm or its wine-making abilities

We were first introduced to Galena
Cellars about three years ago when we had another web site dealing with
wines.
The Lawlors, owners of the picturesque
winery, make available a sampling of wines, including a blackberry fruit
wine that was considered by all that tasted it, absolutely one of the
best they had ever tasted. But that was no surprise to these wine
enthusiasts who were willing to concede that Midwestern Wineries could
make good fruit wines.
The surprise was when they sampled the Country Red. Even a
confirmed wine snob considered it the equal of some of the better French
Wines he had tasted.
So, when we visited the very busy gift
shop of Galena Cellars, we were anticipating that the Lawlors would
continue their tradition of providing good wines that most Midwestern
wineries would avoid. We picked a Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietors
Reserve and a Chardonnay for our weekend retreat at nearby Eagle Ridge
at the Galena Territory.
We were not disappointed. The
Chardonnay ($12.95) had a beautiful clear light golden color. Its nose
was pleasant, and, although we usually prefer a heavier oak-flavored
wine, we found this selection to be highly fruity with a pleasant mouth
feel and a long-lasting and equally pleasing aftertaste.
This would be an especially pleasing
drink for sipping or using with lightly seasoned meals.
The Cabernet ($16.94) was especially
pleasing. It had a nice, dark red color (although not as deep as some of
the California and imported Cabs). As was the case with the
Chardonnay, it had an appealing mouth feel, and we detected a slight
peppery taste. It was extremely smooth and easy on the taste.
For those who are seeking the
enjoyment of quality wines from a region other than California or the
West Coast, this is an opportunity to see just how far the American Wine
Industry has come.
