DEPARTMENT OF AGING AWARDED
FUNDING TO IMPROVE CARE FOR ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS WITH ALZHEIMER’S
DISEASE
Federal Funds to Enhance
Services in Los Angeles and San Francisco areas
SACRAMENTO
– The California Department of Aging has been awarded $350,000 in
federal funding to enhance assistance for Asian and Pacific Islanders with
Alzheimer’s Disease.
"This grant gives us a wonderful
opportunity to develop a replicable model that gives California’s
increasingly diverse aging population better access to services,"
said Lynda Terry, Director of the Department of Aging. "This type of
approach is in line with Governor Gray Davis’ ‘Aging with Dignity’
initiative which focuses on enhancing home and community-based services to
help California’s elderly population live more independent lives."
California is one of 16 states to
receive a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging’s Alzheimer’s
Disease Demonstration Project Grants to States Program. The national
program offers grants to states for the development of new and more
effective models of intervention to better serve persons with
Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. These grants are targeted for
under-served minority, rural and low-income older persons.
The California grant will be
administered by the California Department of Aging in collaboration with
the Alzheimer’s Association to develop a system of dementia care for
Asian and Pacific Islanders in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay
areas. The project’s focus will be to develop and provide culturally and
linguistically competent educational, social and supportive services for
patients and their caregivers.
"I view this collaborative effort
with the Alzheimer’s Association as a great example of how government
and community organizations can work in partnership to enhance the quality
of life for people afflicted with dementia and for their caregivers,"
added Terry.
California has the highest proportion of
Asian and Pacific Islanders in the nation, about one third of which reside
in Los Angeles County. The San Francisco Bay Area accounts for the second
largest Asian and Pacific Islander population.
Alzheimer’s Disease is a degenerative
brain disease that usually begins gradually, causing a person to forget
recent events or familiar tasks. Nationally, one in 10 persons over 65 and
nearly half of those over 85 have Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly 500,000
elderly Californians have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
