Humor has a definite role to play in
aging…it helps us laugh, chuckle or accept
the fact of aging.
After all, most of us, given the option of
having another Birthday will gladly accept
that rather than the alternative, to be
gone. Also, humor also provides us a chance
to say, ‘yeah, that’s me…but I’m not that
bad’ with a smile.
But humor is hard. One of the best has
always been Frank Kaiser, publisher of
www.SuddenlySenior.com . But
Frank has taken a Summer off to spend more
time as a caregiver and loving husband of
wife, Carolyn, who is making a courageous
fight against a severe form of Cancer.
But nature and communications abhor a
vacuum, and while Frank cannot be replaced,
another senior has stepped into fill the
void left by Frank’s Sabbatical from his
site. It’s Michael Garee, the founder of
www.SeniorMomentsOnline.org , a
web site he describes as a site for seniors
and those who love him. Now, Michael has
entered into a new arena as the author of
‘200 Sure-Fire, Lead-Pipe Cinch
No-Question-About-It Ways to Tell if…Your
Might Be Getting Old!”
Michael and I go back years…and years…and
years (Another way to suggest that we might
be getting old…) having worked together in
corporate communications. Neither of us was
actually best suited for the corporate
world, although we both were able to stay
the course and have relatively successful
careers.
But, both of us were free spirits and have
been much happier in doing what we are doing
now. And, Michael’s book offers an
easy-read, Jeff Foxworthy-type of quick hits
to make us smile.
Ironically, one of the guideposts was you
might be getting old if you have ever
watched a test pattern on TV. Just last
night, wife Brooks’ 48-year-old son was
talking at the dinner table about watching
TV test patterns. I had to smile. A Boomer
growing old…just think about it.
The book also has an added bonus with
Michael’s pithy observation about each of
the sections—‘Your Sex Life’; ‘At Home’;
‘Entertainment’; ‘Out ‘n About’;
‘Technology’; ‘On the Job’; ‘Autos and other
Moving Things’; ‘Your Health’; ‘Style and
Fashion’.
This book is recommended reading, but don’t
expect a scholarly approach. Just some
reminders that growing old might not be as
bad as we think…particularly when we can
take time to laugh at ourselves.
