Woman sentenced
for elderly fraud
Moorpark, California resident, Maria Lucille
Velarde, 49, was recently sentenced to four
years and eight months in state prison for her
role in two fraud schemes targeting disabled
seniors she cared for at Leisure Village in
Camarillo.
Velarde pleaded not guilty in August to multiple
felony charges including grand theft from an
elderly person, forgery, receiving stolen
property, and two counts of identity theft. She
also admitted to stealing more than $50,000 in
merchandise.
Velarde was the former livein caregiver for an
87-year-old Leisure Village resident who had
been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
In addition to the prison sentence, Velarde was
also ordered to pay restitution to the estate of
one of her elderly victims, her ex-husband and
to five separate credit card companies.
