About 47 million Americans are at
increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and death, an analysis of
national medical data reveals in a recent study published in The Journal
of the American Medical Association.
The study points to a
possible increase in healthcare costs in the coming years if Americans
fail to address their burgeoning rates of overweight and obesity through
diet and exercise, according to researchers from the US Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
"This is a massive
health issue", says Colin Milner, CEO International Council on Active
Aging (ICAA). "One which the ICAA and its members are committed to
reducing."
Daniel Hines, publisher
of America's Seniors/TodaysSeniorsnetwork and an ICAA
supporter agrees. "People can reduce the chances of having
heart disease and can slow progression of the disease through better
control of blood sugar levels," says Hines "A program of
diet and exercise is a great way to help reduce heart disease."
America's Seniors/TodaysSeniorsNetwork.com,
along with the International Council on Active Aging and many other
organizations, are urging people to make lifestyle changes during
February, which is American Heart Month.
The ICAA is the only
organization in North America dedicated to changing the way we age by
uniting and working with professionals in the retirement, assisted living,
fitness, rehabilitation, and wellness fields. It connects a community of
like-minded professionals who share the goals of changing society’s
perceptions of aging and improving the quality of life for aging baby
boomers and older adults within the six dimensions of wellness. The
council supports these professionals with education, information,
resources, and tools, so they can achieve optimal success
