Ombudsmen needed to speak up for Missouri’s
Nursing Home Residents
A program in Missouri helps protect the
rights of nursing home residents but
volunteers are needed to ensure more
residents receive the benefit.
Missouri’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program
currently has 300
volunteers who visit nursing home residents
every week, speaking on their behalf,
helping them solve problems and informing
them of their rights. But even more are
needed.
“There are 55,000 residents in Missouri’s
nursing homes and other long-term care
facilities,” says Carol Scott, Missouri
State Long-Term Care Ombudsman.
“When a volunteer ombudsman visits, the
residents know someone is there to speak up
for them. Many residents can’t speak for
themselves because they’re too frail.
Volunteer ombudsmen provide a vital link to
their quality of life and care.”
Initially, volunteer ombudsmen receive 18
hours of training. Then they get quarterly
and annual updates.
For information on becoming a volunteer
ombudsman, contact the Missouri State
Long-Term Care Ombudsman Office at
1-800-309-3282, or visit <http://www.dhss.mo.gov/Ombudsman/>.
